GTA 6: Everything That Happened From the First Trailer Until Today (Timeline)

by Lucas Almeida 4 min read

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026 — and the road here has produced records, delays, leaks and a showcase that crashed Netflix. If you missed any part of it, this is the guide: everything Rockstar Games has confirmed about GTA 6, from the first trailer in December 2023 to this week, in chronological order, with no rumors.

Quick answer: where does GTA 6 stand today?

The date is locked for November 19, 2026 (midnight local time) on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S — no PC version at launch. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate $99.99 (digital only); the physical box contains a code, not a disc. Preloading begins November 12. After the August 27 Extended Look, pre-orders jumped nearly 600%. The online mode arrives after launch.

What we know about the game

Two protagonists, a whole state

Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, with character switching, in Leonida — the Florida-inspired state that includes Vice City, Ambrosia, Grassrivers, Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn and Mount Kalaga. It is the series’ biggest map; according to Rob Nelson, nobody on the team knows the whole game by heart.

Mechanics confirmed in September

Robberies at nearly any store, a six-star wanted system, a focus ability for combat and escapes, fuel that needs refilling, narrower roads that change driving, and the end of “tap X to sprint” — running is now controlled differently. Weapons organized by class and non-lethal options.

Online comes later

GTA 6 launches as a single-player game. The online component comes later: in employment tribunal documents, Rockstar referred to a confidential 32-player format. The company has not detailed it publicly.

Why this matters to you

The disc-less “physical” edition changes the math for anyone planning to resell or lend the game — you cannot. PS5 and Series X owners are set; PC players will wait until 2027 or 2028, as with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. And if you are torn between a PS5 and a PS5 Pro, the leaked native-4K support is the strongest argument yet for the upgraded console.
