SEO in 2026: AI Mode in the Chrome Bar, Shopping Inside AI and How to Adapt

by Théo Carvalho 4 min read

September 2026 packed in changes that redefine SEO. Google’s AI Mode becomes accessible directly from the Chrome address bar, Google is testing ads with direct purchases inside AI answers, a spam update ran from August 18 to 21, and industry data suggests most AI Mode queries end without a click. For anyone who lives on organic traffic, it is time to change the map — not to leave the game.

Quick answer: what changed?

AI Mode becomes a shortcut in the Chrome address bar (U.S., English, by the end of September; more countries in the following weeks); Google is testing ads with purchase offers inside AI Mode and is preparing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for buying directly in AI Mode and Gemini; the August spam update hit low-quality sites; and the generative AI performance report in Search Console was expanded. The result: fewer clicks, and far more weight on being cited.

AI Mode in the Chrome bar: search changes address

When a user types a question into the Chrome bar and gets an AI answer before seeing ten links, the classic results page loses relevance. According to independent studies, roughly 93% of queries answered by AI Mode do not generate a click to any website. Google has added link carousels for developing stories and travel features (flight price tracking, hotel booking) to AI Mode, now powered by Gemini 3.7 Flash — meaning the experience is becoming complete inside the answer.

Shopping inside AI: the UCP

Google is testing ads with direct purchase offers in AI Mode and has announced the Universal Commerce Protocol, which will allow checkout without leaving AI Mode or Gemini. For e-commerce, it inverts the “I’ll send you to the store” model: the store becomes the answer. Merchants with well-structured product feeds (price, stock, reviews) get in; those relying on landing pages get left out.

A five-step adaptation plan (SEO + GEO)

1. Answer directly in the first 60 words

AI models cite sources that answer clearly. Every page needs a “quick answer” block right after the headline.

2. Structure data the AI can read

Article, FAQPage, Product and Organization schema, real HTML tables and identified authors. That is what feeds AI Mode.

3. Measure citations, not just clicks

Use the generative AI report in Search Console and test your key questions in AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity to see whether your brand shows up.

4. Prepare your product feed for UCP

Complete Merchant Center data, current prices and stock, verified reviews.

5. Build your own audience

Newsletter, community and brand. Traffic that does not depend on a Google click is the only kind immune to zero-click.

Why this matters to you

Companies that depend on blogs and Google to sell need to decide now whether to compete for AI citations, shift part of the effort to paid traffic and community, or both. What no longer works is producing volumes of thin content hoping to rank — the August spam update was the warning. And if AI Mode is not yet in your language, that is a window of a few months to adapt before traffic drops.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO?

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the set of practices that get a brand cited in AI answers such as AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. It is also called AEO.

Is traditional SEO dead?

No. The fundamentals (useful content, structured data, authority) remain the base AIs use to pick sources. What changes is the metric: citation and visibility, not just clicks.

When does AI Mode reach Chrome outside the U.S.?

Google says the Chrome address-bar shortcut reaches U.S. users in English by the end of September 2026, expanding to more countries and languages in the weeks ahead.
