iPhone Duo vs Xiaomi 18 Fold: Apple’s First Foldable vs China’s “Mid-Fold”

September 2026 delivered two foldables that define the segment. On September 7, Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi 18 Fold in China, with its in-house XRing O3 chip and a form factor it calls “mid-fold.” Two days later, Apple launched the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, at $1,999. The Xiaomi 18 Fold has a 5.38″ cover screen and a 7.58″ (4:3) inner display, Xiaomi’s own 3nm XRing O3 chip, a Leica triple camera with a telephoto lens, IP68 and a starting price of ¥12,000 (about $1,650) — but, for now, China only.

Design and displays

Both follow the same idea: a compact device closed that becomes almost a tablet open. Apple stresses that the Duo, when open, is the thinnest iPhone ever made — thinner than the iPhone Air — with a liquid-metal hinge and minimal crease. Xiaomi calls the 18 Fold a “mid-fold”: a format between big book-style foldables and small flips, passport-sized when closed, with an updated “Dragon Bone” hinge. Both carry IP68 ratings — the Duo is dust-tight, something the Galaxy Z Fold8 does not offer.

Chips: A20 Pro versus XRing O3

This is the most interesting matchup. The iPhone Duo uses the 2nm A20 Pro, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, reportedly with 12GB of RAM. Xiaomi fitted the XRing O3, its own 3nm, 10-core chip, paired with LPDDR6 memory from China’s CXMT and a claimed 85% faster GPU than its predecessor. Very few brands design their own phone processors — and Xiaomi is now in that club, with Chinese components in the supply chain.

Cameras

On paper, Xiaomi wins here: a Leica Summilux triple camera — ƒ/1.7 main, 3.5x ƒ/2.8 telephoto and a 17mm ultrawide. The iPhone Duo has only two cameras (wide and ultrawide), no telephoto, and its inner selfie camera hides under the display. Heavy zoom shooters will feel the difference on the Duo.
