Profound Hits Unicorn Status Selling “SEO for AI”: $180M in 7 Months

by Théo Carvalho 3 min read

Profound, the startup that helps brands show up in AI assistants’ answers, announced on September 15, 2026 a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation. The round was led by Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins and came less than seven months after a $96 million Series C. Two years after launch, the company has become the symbol of a brand-new market: AEO, or answer engine optimization.

Quick answer: what does Profound do?

Profound monitors how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode describe and recommend brands, shows which sources those AIs rely on, and helps companies produce content that gets cited in the answers. It is the equivalent of SEO, but for answer engines — hence AEO (also called GEO, generative engine optimization).

Why AEO became a gold rush

The reason is simple: traffic is moving. Industry studies indicate that most queries answered inside Google’s AI Mode end without a click to any website. If a shopper asks “what is the best laptop under $1,000” and gets a ready answer, a brand that is not cited simply does not exist in that decision. Big advertisers noticed this before agencies did — and Profound got ahead by measuring the phenomenon back when it was just an analytics platform.

From analytics to platform

The company started by measuring AI visibility and expanded into the full cycle: researching how AIs perceive a brand, identifying the sources that feed the answers, and producing content optimized to be cited.

What it says about the 2026 startup market

Profound is a poster child for the hottest unicorn year since 2021. According to Crunchbase, 195 companies joined the billion-dollar club in the first half of 2026 alone, surpassing all of 2025. Most of them come from applied AI — and categories that did not exist two years ago, such as AEO, already have leaders valued in the billions.

Why this matters to you

If you run marketing or own a business with a digital presence, the message is that “ranking on Google” is no longer enough. Start with AEO basics: ask the AIs themselves how they describe your brand, make sure the sources they cite (Wikipedia, major publications, review sites) are accurate, and publish content that answers direct questions. If you are a founder, the lesson is speed: Profound raised nearly $300 million in under a year because it measured a problem before everyone else.
