September 2026 Games: Silent Hill Townfall, Fire Emblem, Trails (94) and More
September 2026 is the last “free” month before GTA 6 swallows the calendar — and the industry took advantage. In four weeks we get Silent Hill: Townfall, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, the Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter remake (94 on Metacritic), Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War IV, Minecraft Dungeons II and Valheim 1.0, on top of the already released Marvel’s Wolverine and Control Resonant. This guide covers what is hyped, what got panned and what is worth your time (and money).
Quick answer: what to play in September?
Best score so far: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter (94). Biggest hype: Silent Hill: Townfall (Sept 24), Konami’s “most interesting risk,” and Control Resonant (Sept 24, 85 average). Biggest disappointment: Marvel’s Wolverine (78). Safe bet on Switch 2: Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave (Sept 17). For PC: Dawn of War IV (Sept 17), the RTS returning after nine years.

The hyped ones
Silent Hill: Townfall — the risk Konami needed
An exploration-focused horror game set in an abandoned Scottish town, starring Simon, made by Screen Burn with Annapurna. Previews speak of “lingering dread” and the best atmosphere since Silent Hill 2. Producer Motoi Okamoto went further: he said Townfall could outscore both Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f with critics. Out September 24 on PS5 and PC.
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter — the quiet 94
The remake of the 2006 Japanese RPG is, so far, September’s best-reviewed game. Estelle Bright returns to Liberl to uncover Joshua’s disappearance and face Ouroboros. It is the prettiest entry point into the Trails saga — and it even runs on the original Switch.
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave — the Switch 2 exclusive
Set in the world of Three Houses, it follows four heroes through the Heroic Games, a tournament that grants the winner a wish. It is the tactical RPG Nintendo saved for the console’s second half-year.
Dawn of War IV — the RTS that came back
Nine years after the divisive Dawn of War III, King Art Games returns the series to classic real-time strategy, with four playable factions on the planet Kronus. PC-only, it is the genre’s most anticipated release in years.
The panned ones
Marvel’s Wolverine is the case of the month: story and characters praised, combat panned, 78 on Metacritic — Insomniac’s lowest in a decade and Sony’s worst-reviewed exclusive of the PS5 era. Onimusha: Way of the Sword split opinion: “ponderous” combat that some called dated in a market dominated by soulslikes. And Halloween: The Game follows the fate of asymmetric multiplayer titles: praise for film fidelity, doubts about longevity.
Why this matters to you
With GTA 6 on November 19 and Black Friday right after, September is the time to choose well: two or three games, not ten. Our pick by profile — story and scares: Townfall; a long RPG: Trails 2nd (94) or Fire Emblem; something different: Control Resonant; PC and strategy: Dawn of War IV. And if the budget is tight, Valheim 1.0 is the month’s best value per hour.
