Instead of a third trailer, Rockstar Games did something unprecedented: it put 27 minutes of GTA 6 gameplay on Netflix on August 27, 2026, with a six-hour exclusive window before YouTube. The result was a media event — 31.1 million views in four days, No. 1 in 87 of 93 countries, and Netflix briefly knocked offline. We watched “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” frame by frame to answer what matters: does the game convince? And what has Rockstar revealed since?
Quick answer: was it worth it?
Yes. The Extended Look is the most honest material released for GTA 6 so far: captured on PS5, it shows switching between Jason and Lucia, robberies, a six-star chase, the focus ability and the relationship system — with no trailer cuts. The strengths are Vice City’s density and the vehicle physics; the doubts are about on-foot combat, which looks close to Red Dead 2, and the online mode, which did not appear. The reaction was immediate: pre-orders rose nearly 600% the following week.
The reaction in numbers
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Premiere | Aug 27, 3 p.m. ET on Netflix; YouTube at 9 p.m. ET |
| Length | 27 minutes, captured on PS5 |
| Netflix views | 31.1 million in four days (Aug 28–30); No. 1 globally for the week |
| Reach | No. 1 among English-language films in 87 of 93 tracked countries |
| Infrastructure | Netflix briefly crashed; +35% concurrent users, +125% website traffic, +24% app downloads |
| Commercial effect | GTA 6 pre-orders up nearly 600% (Sept 1) |
For perspective: no Netflix film or series beat a video-game video during the week of August 24–30. The partnership was Rockstar’s idea, and Netflix — which already distributes the GTA trilogy in its games catalog — agreed to become the launch’s “movie theater.”
What the gameplay showed (and what we think)
A living Vice City
The first half is a tour of Vice City and its surroundings: beaches, the Grassrivers swamps, the port of Port Gellhorn. The pedestrian density, weather and 4K reflections justify the two delays. It is the first GTA where the city seems to have its own routine, with NPCs reacting to you before any crime.
Jason and Lucia, for real
Protagonist switching is instant and the duo works: in one sequence Lucia negotiates while Jason keeps watch; in another, the two flee a robbery with police behind them and the focus ability slows the action to choose between shooting, disarming or running. There are non-lethal options — new for the series.
Robberies and six stars
Rockstar confirmed that nearly any store can be robbed. The wanted level now goes to six stars; the chase shown, with a helicopter and roadblocks, is the tensest stretch of the video. Narrower roads change driving — less GTA V, more Red Dead 2 in the sense of weight.
What still worries
On-foot combat is the area that evolved least visually: heavy animations and automatic cover recall Red Dead Redemption 2, which divides fans. And the online mode, which sustained GTA V for 13 years, did not get a second of screen time.

Why this matters to you
If you were waiting to “see it to believe it,” the Extended Look is the proof: watch the 27 minutes before deciding on a pre-order. For buyers, the video also helps choose a console — a PS5 Pro with native 4K is the reference platform. And for the industry, the Rockstar–Netflix model inaugurates a way to launch trailers as streaming events, with blockbuster-level audience numbers.
